(NOW AND THEN THERE'S) (Words & music by Trader)
June 10, 1958: RCA's Studio B, Nashville (Now And Then There's) A Fool Such As I," was a special favorite of Tom Diskin's from the days when he and the Colonel had managed Hank Snow (who had the original hit with it in 1953). Neither of Elvis' companies owned any publishing on the song, which made it an unlikely single candidate, but Diskin felt it had potential and made a very uncharacteristic pitch to the Aberbachs to make a deal on the song. Chet Atkins's rhythm guitar lent real excitement to the lilting melody, giving it the kind of distinctive flavor. (Now And Then There's) A Fool Such As I/I Need Your Love Tonight was on The Charts for 15 weeks, beginning March 23, 1959. Sales went gold with one million shipped one day after its release.
